History of Tenby

Tenby is a popular holiday destination that has a lot of history within its ancient walls. Tenby actually dates right back to around the Norman Conquest when it was invaded in 1093 and was then colonised. Intact from 1264, the town’s medieval walls still stand as proud as they did back then. The walls were originally built to try to fortify Tenby from the attacks by the Welsh rebellion. The walls still stand strong today.
The streets are narrow and they are cobbled. The cobbled streets are beautifully lined with cafes, shops and delectable restaurants that are constant reminders to the people who live there and the people who visit how it used to be in Tenby in times gone by. It actually wasn’t until after the Victorians came to Tenby that it became a popular destination for tourists and holiday makers. The Victorians actually believed that Tenby held beneficial health to those who went there and they flocked to Tenby making it what it is today.
Then Tenby was popularised in 1863 by Sir William Paxton and not long after came the industrial revolution. This brought more people to Tenby as railways were built and shipping lanes increased the trade links and the tourism.
There are lots of things to see and to do in Tenby included visiting the Tenby Mural. This mural was painted by a local artist named Eric Bradforth. The mural is 32ft high and 8ft wide and graces the Market Hall. The mural beautifully and perfectly shows the history of Tenby and many different factors of the holiday town. It also shows people of interest in Tenby and they influence they had and still have today.
Tenby is a wonderful seaside resort that is full of interesting places and great people ready to welcome you into their open arms.
